Message from your PMLO

As we head into October, many practices are now well into their current registrar placements. This is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on how things are tracking – for both your team and your registrar. 

With mid-term Workplace-Based Assessments (WBAs), such as MiniCEX and RCA approaching, it’s an ideal time to check that both educational and operational supports are in place to help your registrar succeed. 

As practice managers, your role in supporting both the registrar and their supervisor remains essential throughout the term. While orientation may be behind us, now is a valuable moment to:  

• revisit supervision arrangements: confirm case discussion time is occurring regularly and documented 

• check in with the registrar: are they feeling supported? Do they know who to approach for different issues? 

We know that a well-supported registrar benefits not only from clinical teaching but also from a practice culture that values open communication, collaboration, and professional growth. Let’s continue to create that space – from the reception desk to the consulting room.

2026.1 placement update

In September, training site capacity updates and registrar training intentions were collected and finalised, with registrar group allocation and final training capacity to be confirmed on 10 October. This groundwork sets the stage for the next phase. 

From 27 October, registrars can commence applying to practices, and training sites may choose to hold interviews; however, no offers can be made until 3 November.

Rural Generalists formally recognised

After six years of strong advocacy, Rural Generalist Medicine will be formally recognised as a specialist medical field within general practice. 

This landmark decision, announced by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Mark Butler MP, follows years of dedicated advocacy by the RACGP and ACRRM, in partnership with governments, health agencies and other organisations.   

This is a positive step in recognising the vital work of Rural Generalists in rural and remote communities. It’s also a critical step towards securing better recognition and future remuneration that reflects the broad scope of Rural Generalist practice – including general practice, emergency care, and advanced skills in areas like anaesthesia, obstetrics and mental health. 

The RACGP is now working with the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to accredit the RACGP Rural Generalist Fellowship (FRACGP-RG) as an approved Rural Generalist qualification.
