PMLO update – preparing for the upcoming registrar intake

I’m Samina, one of the practice manager liaison officers here to support you in your role as practice managers of training sites. 

A key update for this month is that practices have now received their capacity confirmations, so you should now have clarity on how many registrars you can accommodate for the upcoming intake. 

From 20 April, registrars have been submitting applications and practices commencing interviews. We’re expecting a higher than usual number of applications this round, so it may be helpful to start preparing now by confirming supervisor availability, interview times, room capacity and onboarding plans. 

Thank you for the important work you do behind the scenes to support supervisors and registrars. Your preparation plays a huge role in ensuring a smooth recruitment process and a positive training experience for everyone involved.

Reminder: MPN deadline – Monday 1 June

Once registrar placement is confirmed, Medicare provider number (MPN) paperwork will be issued. Please ensure this is completed and returned to the RACGP by Monday 1 June to avoid any delays to your registrars' start. See the Placement timeline 2026.2 for more information.  

Less than three weeks until Practice Owners Conference

Practice Owners Conference 2026 is just weeks away, bringing together practice owners, managers and industry leaders. Under this year’s theme ‘Stronger in practice’, explore approaches already working across general practice, and how to apply them in your own practice. 

 23–24 May, ICC Sydney 

Across two days, the program covers financial performance, Medicare compliance, data and running a sustainable practice, with practical insights you can apply to strengthen how your practice runs. 

Pre-conference workshops have seen strong demand, with limited availability remaining for some. 

If you want practical approaches, you can apply in your practice, explore the program, and register today to start planning your conference experience. 

Changes to practice circumstances

A reminder to please reach out to your training coordinator if there have been any changes to your practice’s:       

• name     
• address       
• ABN or ACN       
• bank account details       
• site ID       
• supervisors.      

These changes affect all payments – including teaching, practice, and stipend payments – as well as your registrar's Medicare provider number (MPN), so please share any updates with your training coordinator as soon as possible.  

Please also let us know about any changes in ownership, as these may impact training site accreditation.  

Training site stipend update

To support attendance at RACGP supervisor professional development (SPD) activities, eligible AGPT training sites receive a stipend each semester. If your training site is eligible this semester, the payment will be made to the account listed in your profile in the TMS.

Lead culturally safe care in practice

Strengthen your practice with a new three-part webinar series from the National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners (NAATSIHWP) based on the RACGP-endorsed resource, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners in Primary Health Care – A Guide for General Practice. 

The series builds understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and Health Practitioner workforce and their critical role in delivering culturally safe, high-quality care. 

Participants will gain clarity on scope of practice, employment and funding arrangements, and the structural and cultural factors that influence workforce sustainability.

Registrar incentive payments available from 2026.1

A reminder that three government incentive payments are available from 2026.1 to support registrars in their transition from the hospital sector to GP training.

GPT1 salary incentive: Registrars undertaking their first six-month core general practice term may receive $5,000 (FTE) per month.   

Study leave incentive: Up to five days (FTE) per training year for exam preparation and professional development, paid at NTCER base rates + 12% super + 10% loading. Study leave must be arranged in advance as unpaid leave. Payments are made monthly in arrears and unused leave does not accrue.  

Parental leave incentive: Primary carers can receive up to 20 weeks (FTE); secondary carers up to two weeks. Payments are based on NTCER rates + 12% super + 10% loading.  

All payments are pro-rated for part-time registrars and are administered by the RACGP on behalf of Services Australia. Full eligibility criteria are available via the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s GP Training Incentive Payments webpage and the AGPT Registrar Handbook.
