A message from the Chief Education and Training Officer

Welcome to 2026, and thank you for creating training environments where registrars, supervisors, and communities can thrive. 

I’m Narelle Mills, Chief Education and Training Officer at RACGP. As this may be our first direct communication, I wanted to briefly introduce myself. 

I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to how we support training delivery across the program, drawing on more than 20 years’ experience in health education, accreditation, and regulation. 

This year, we’ll continue providing the tools, guidance, and support you need to deliver high-quality training and help registrars meet program requirements efficiently. I look forward to working with you to strengthen general practice training across Australia.

MPN reminder

A friendly reminder to check that your registrars have received their Medicare provider number (MPN) with full billing rights and have shared this with you. 

1. Ensure they've entered these details into their Registrar Portfolio ('Registrar Details' tab) in the training management system (TMS) 
2. Check they've added their bank account details to PRODA (all registrars)

Education calendars

The 2026.1 out-of-practice education calendars are now available on our website. Each regional calendar contains the same information; however, the dates of events will vary according to local planning. Be sure to choose the calendar for your region and your registrar's training stage. 

Supervision and registrar training requirements

We've developed a summary of supervision requirements, registrar training activities, timelines and helpful resources for the upcoming semester, with specific requirements outlined for each GP training stage. 

To access the documents: 

1. Log in to the training management system (TMS) 
2. Click 'Quick Links and Subscriptions' on the top toolbar 
3. Select 'Registrar Training Requirements' or 'Supervisor Requirements' from the drop-down list (see image below)

GP training incentive payments

The Australian Government has introduced three incentive payments for Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program registrars from 2026.1, designed to support the transition from hospital-based work to community general practice. 

GPT1 incentive payment:  

Registrars are not required to apply. Eligibility is determined by confirmed placement details (placement type, term, and FTE) recorded in the training management system (TMS). Once a registrar confirms a placement with their practice, a payment schedule is automatically created. Eligible registrars will receive an email requesting completion of an online declaration. Payments cannot be released until this declaration is completed. 

Study and parental leave incentives:  

Registrars must submit a leave application form available in the TMS, including required supporting evidence and completion of the linked declaration. Payments are scheduled once the application is reviewed and approved in accordance with eligibility criteria. 

Supervisors and practice managers are encouraged to support registrars by ensuring placement details are confirmed promptly and by directing any eligibility or payment queries to the training coordinator. 

Supporting registrars to provide culturally safe care

Joint Colleges Training Services (JCTS) supports general practice registrars by delivering practical cultural safety education that strengthens clinical confidence and cultural capability when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

JCTS works closely with RACGP and ACRRM to ensure registrars receive tailored support throughout their training. From the very start of a registrar's career, JCTS cultural and medical educators combine clinical guidance with lived experience to help registrars build safe, respectful and trusted relationships with their local communities. 

Early cultural safety education can make placements run more smoothly, deepen registrars' understanding of community needs and set them up for career success.

AGPT Training Site and Supervisor Handbook V15 now available

The AGPT Training Site and Supervisor Handbook (previously known as the AGPT Practice and Supervisor Handbook) has been updated and is now in effect.  

Key updates include: 

• New section on the registrar’s consulting room and provision of equipment (under 'Your role in hosting a registrar') 
• Information on ADF registrar placements and contractual arrangements 

• ReCEnT report discussion added to in-practice teaching activities 
• Updated work, health and safety information, including links to the GP Training Safety and Wellbeing Policy and RACGP Wellbeing Hub 
• Clarified supervision requirements and supervisor-to-registrar ratios 
• New sections on training program contacts, 'Who’s who in training', and dual college accreditation 
• Updated designated supervisor requirements and assessment processes 
• Links to orientation checklists and the practice manager’s preparation checklist
