Nearly a decade on, I'm still feeling like I'm in freefall. It's a thrilling yet mortifying experience. Inward reflection on how little I actually know, and gazing outward, the patient asking me to solve their most intimate problems, their pain, their relationships.

Just when you get a handle on a presentation, there is a twist, a new take or uncertainty.

The nature of the beast. This is medicina. 500 years ago, we would’ve been walking around with bird masks to ward off evil spirits. Today, we use radiation to eliminate cancer. Tomorrow?

More importantly, how will we do it? With compassion...love...honesty?

The core is the human connection. Here together, specks on a rock hurtling through space, looking after one another by living an honest existence that evolves into a greater meaning.

We just can't do it alone.

GPs are the community builders. Soldiers on the ground. Jacks of all trades. If it ever becomes overwhelming, remember, you are one of us and we are here for you.

Calling all rural AGPT registrars

Complete your MTS while renewing your Ahpra registration

The annual Medical Training Survey (MTS) is an opportunity to reflect on your medical training and provide feedback to support continuous improvement. It’s safe and confidential, with all survey data de-identified in reporting.

Survey topics include wellbeing, training program curriculum, workplace environment and culture, and access to teaching. 

Your feedback helps us to recognise and respond to potential issues in medical training that could impact patient safety, including environment and culture, unacceptable behaviours and poor supervision.

How to complete the survey:
When renewing your Ahpra registration, your survey link will appear in a pop-up box at the end of the registration process. Simply click ‘next’ to start the MTS. If you miss it, Ahpra will send the link in your registration confirmation email.

The RACGP placement process for 2026.1 is now open

The 2026.1 RACGP placement process for all AGPT registrars has begun. Please take note of the key dates and mark them in your calendar.  

You’ll need to complete your registrar training intention update in the training management system (TMS) by Monday 15 September. This is the first step to securing a placement for the coming semester, so you will need to complete the training intention update even if you will be on leave or expecting to achieve your Fellowship.
 
The RACGP will use the information to allocate you to a location group. You’ll receive an email from your training coordinator to confirm your group and you can begin applying for training sites in this group from 27 October.

Is an incentivised placement for 2026.1 for you?

Each year, the Australian government provides additional funding to the RACGP to build capacity and support GP training in areas of workforce need. These funds are offered in addition to the National Consistent Payments (NCP) provided by Services Australia and help cover the extra costs of living and training in these areas.

For the 2026.1 semester, the RACGP has identified 233 priority GP catchments across Australia where registrars are most needed. Within these catchments, there are 351 accredited training sites offering incentivised placements. View the full list of incentivised placements here.

An incentivised placement is a great opportunity to:

• build your clinical skills and confidence

• gain valuable rural and community-based experience

• provide healthcare where it’s needed most.

New guidelines for the safe and ethical use of AI in training

We’ve developed new guidelines to support registrars in navigating artificial intelligence (AI) safely, ethically, and effectively throughout general practice training.

As technologies become more integrated into clinical care and education, registrars must develop digital literacy and judgement to uphold patient safety, professional standards, and academic integrity. These guidelines also acknowledge the varying levels of digital literacy across registrars and supervisors.

AKT/KFP enrolments now open for 2026.1

Enrolments for the 2026.1 Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and Key Feature Problem (KFP) exams are now open. Enrolments close Tuesday 30 September.

Key details:

• check your eligibility and enrol on our website
• requests for special arrangements must be submitted by 30 September
• KFP format recently updated to consist of 70 multiple selection questions instead of handwritten responses

• exam support online (ESO) and exam support program (ESP) modules available now on gplearning
• exam technique videos available now in the national exam video course on gplearning
• September SAPT available from 8 September – log in to gplearning and select the self-assessment progress tests course
• practice exams (half-length) available via email six weeks before your exam dates

AKT/KFP exam support – new SAPT coming 8 September

The latest Self-Assessment Progress Test (SAPT) launches 8 September to support your Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and Key Feature Problem (KFP) exam preparation.

SAPTs offer exam-standard questions and cases to identify your learning needs, self-assess your clinical reasoning, and build your written exam skills. After completion, you’ll have access to answers and rationales, topic resources, curriculum links, and further study options.

Available now: New exam technique videos from our communication skills specialists team demonstrate proven approaches for different question types and time/stress management strategies.

To access both resources:

2. Select either:

• national exam videos course for technique videos (available now)
• self-assessment progress tests course for the SAPT (available from 8 September)
