A message from the Chief Education and Training Officer

Welcome to 2026 and a new year with the AGPT Program. 

I’m Narelle Mills, Chief Education and Training Officer at RACGP. As this may be the first time some of you are hearing from me, I wanted to briefly introduce myself. 

I’m dedicated to supporting the teams that guide you through your training journey, drawing on more than 20 years’ experience in health education, accreditation, and regulation. 

Your commitment to patient care and learning strengthens general practice in communities across Australia. This year, we’ll continue to provide the guidance and support you need to thrive as a clinician and meet program requirements with confidence.

MPN reminder

A friendly reminder to check that you’ve received your Medicare provider number (MPN) with full billing rights, and that you have:    

• shared this with your practice manager    
• ​entered these details into your Registrar Portfolio ('Registrar Details' tab) in the training management system (TMS) 
• added your bank account details to PRODA.   

How to add or update bank account details in PRODA – all registrars  

1. Log in to PRODA
2. ​Select ‘My personal details’ 
3. Select ‘My banking details’ – a list of all provider numbers and programs with bank details registered will be displayed 
4. Select ‘Add’ or ‘Edit’ for GPTP on the right side of the table to put in your bank details (don’t adjust the other lines as they relate to the practice payments) 
5. Enter the details or select an existing account from the dropdown list and select the acknowledgment checkbox 
6. Click ‘Submit’ – a success screen will display to confirm details have been updated

Education calendars

The 2026.1 out-of-practice education calendars are now available on our website. The calendars outline activity requirements for the upcoming semester, specific to your training stage.    
 
Each regional calendar contains the same information; however, the dates of events will vary according to local planning. Be sure to select your region to view the information relevant to you.

Registrar training requirements

We've developed a summary of registrar training activities, timelines and helpful links for the upcoming semester, with specific requirements outlined for each GP training stage. 

To access the document: 

1. Log in to the training management system (TMS) 
2. ​Click 'Quick Links and Subscriptions' on the top toolbar 
3. Select 'Registrar Training Requirements' from the drop-down list (see image below)

GP training incentive payments

The Australian Government has introduced three incentive payments for AGPT registrars from 2026.1, designed to support the transition from hospital-based work to community general practice. 

 
GPT1 incentive payment: 

You don’t need to apply. Eligibility is based on your confirmed placement details (placement type, term, and FTE) already recorded in the training management system (TMS). Once your placement is confirmed, a payment schedule is automatically created.
If eligible, you'll receive an email requesting completion of an online declaration. Payment cannot be made until this declaration is completed. 

 
Study and parental leave incentives: 

To claim study or parental leave incentive payments, you must submit a leave application form available via’ Forms, Documents and Links’ in the TMS.
The form outlines required supporting evidence and includes a link to the mandatory declaration. Payment will be scheduled once your application is reviewed and approved.

Supporting registrars to provide culturally safe care

Joint Colleges Training Services (JCTS) supports general practice registrars by delivering practical cultural safety education that strengthens clinical confidence and cultural capability when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

JCTS works closely with RACGP and ACRRM to ensure registrars receive tailored support throughout their training. From the very start of your career, JCTS cultural and medical educators combine clinical guidance with lived experience to help you build safe, respectful and trusted relationships with your local communities.

Early cultural safety education can make your placements run more smoothly, deepen your understanding of community needs and set you up for career success.

Updates to the gplearning dashboard

From 27 January, the gplearning dashboard will be updated to create a more intuitive and streamlined experience when accessing learning resources. 

What's changing 

• A new, improved search function at the top of the dashboard for more intuitive searching 
  • ​​This replaces the ‘Content Quick Search', 'Curriculum and Syllabus Quick Search’, ‘Core units gplearning resources’ and ‘Contextual units gplearning resources’ widgets
• An increase in learner journey tiles from six to eight, with clearer pathways for different learner groups: 
  • ‘Pre-GPT1’ and ‘Community GP terms' merged into a single ‘AGPT registrars’ tile 
  • ‘Fellowship exam preparation’ renamed as the ‘Exam preparation toolkit’ 
  • Addition of a new ‘First Nations culture and health’ tile  

Some widgets have been removed to make room for future enhancements.

All exam preparation resources in one place

As part of the gplearning dashboard updates on 27 January, the RACGP exam preparation toolkit will launch on gplearning, bringing all exam preparation and support resources together in one easy-to-navigate course. 

What's included 

• Expert resources for AKT, KFP and CCE 
• Study planning tools and exam technique advice 
• Practice CCE cases 
• Linked resources, including SAPTs, curriculum and past exam reports 
• A forum to find and join study groups 
• Guidance on when to use each resource 

Module changes 

Existing exam support modules have been consolidated: 

• 'Exam support online' (ESO) and 'Introduction to the CCE' are now part of the 'Exam guidance program' 
• 'Exam support program' (ESP) is now delivered as two modules: 
  • 'Learning plan and study skills' 
  • 'AKT and KFP exam technique' 

From 27 January, all exam preparation content will be accessed through the Exam preparation toolkit. Previous standalone modules will no longer be available. 

Extended SAPT access 

The full 2023 SAPT catalogue will remain accessible until March 2027, giving you more time to use these resources. 

Log in to gplearning from 27 January to access the Exam preparation toolkit from your dashboard. 

2026.1 CCE information video coming soon

We're releasing the 2026.1 Clinical Competency Exam (CCE) information video on Wednesday 4 March to help you prepare for your exam. 

Dr Rebecca Lock, the CCE National Assessment Advisor, will cover: 

• the CCE format 
• support resources and how to use them 
• study tips 
• how to prepare for and approach the exam.

Evidence in practice

Registrar exposure to older patients – does it vary between practices? 

Registrars are known to see fewer older patients than experienced GPs. If opportunities for registrars to see older patients are further limited in some training practices, this could affect how well they develop skills in managing complex, age-related health needs. 

Using data from the Registrar Clinical Encounters in Training (ReCEnT) study, we compared the proportion of registrar consultations with older patients (aged 65 years and over) across practices. The study collected data from 978 practices and 4643 registrars between 2010–23. 

We found that when a registrar moved to a practice with more older patients, they saw approximately twice as many older patients than before. Conversely, if they moved to a practice with fewer older patients, they saw approximately half as many as before.  

These findings suggest that registrar exposure to older patients is largely driven by the practice. As such, strategies to improve registrar engagement with older patients should be targeted at the practice level. For example, practices could include registrars in nursing home visits and facilitate opportunities for them to jointly manage older patient care with their supervisors.

AGPT Registrar Training Handbook V18 now available

The AGPT Registrar Training Handbook has been updated and is now in effect. 

Key updates include: 

• Recognition of clinical hospital experience gained as a locum (under ‘Assessment of readiness for general  practice’) 
• Updates to the ReCEnT project (under ‘In-practice education’) 
• Telehealth requirements (under ‘Placement considerations’) 

• Consulting room and equipment requirements (under ‘Preparing for a placement’) 
• Presumption of fitness to sit exams (under ‘Fellowship exams’) 
• Negotiated study leave changed from three days per exam semester to six days per year 
• Clarified program time definitions for full-time and part-time training 
• Updated information on medical indemnity requirements and prolonged leave 
• Changes to exam eligibility and sitting exams while on approved leave

2025.2 incentivised placement claims

Did you complete a 2025.2 placement in an incentivised location? Please submit your reimbursement claim as soon as possible.  

Claims for 2025.2 must be submitted within four weeks of the end of semester. Claims submitted after this date cannot be processed. 

Claim forms are available via the TMS.
