Free meningococcal B vaccines for Tassie infants

Tasmanian GPs can now offer their infant patients a free meningococcal B vaccine.
 
As of 1 July, the subsidised vaccine is available to all infants from six weeks of age to two years, as well as a catch-up vaccination for children born from 1 July 2025.
 
The vaccine is being rolled out in the state’s general practices and select local council clinics.
 
Tasmanian GP Dr Prashanth Reddy Gangapuram is now urging parents to speak to their doctor about the meningococcal B vaccine.
 
‘It might be rare, but it can cause life-threatening consequences in children if it's not immunised against,’ he said.
 
‘With the rising cost-of-living pressure, this investment into the meningococcal B vaccine can break the financial barriers for many younger families across Tasmania.’
 
State Health Minister Bridget Archer echoed those calls, saying the funding will help to ease financial pressures facing many Tasmanians.

‘We know cost has been a barrier for many families, with the vaccine previously only available through private prescription,’ she said.

‘Our $4 million investment removes that barrier, ensuring every Tasmanian infant can receive this important protection at no cost.’
 
Nationwide, 39 cases of meningococcal have been reported this year – 12 of those being in children younger than five.
 
The meningococcal B vaccine remains free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants, as well as people with certain medical conditions.
 
The meningococcal ACWY vaccine is free under the NIP for children aged 12 months, adolescents aged 14–16 years, and people with certain medical conditions.
