The achievements of GPs from around the nation were commemorated in the Queen’s Birthday 2019 Honours List.

Victoria’s Associate Professor Ruth McNair was among the GPs acknowledged in the 2019 Honours List.

‘GPs provide healthcare to the Australian population across their entire lives, ranging from prenatal to palliative,’ RACGP President Dr Harry Nespolon told newsGP.

‘That they are well-represented in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List is recognition, once again, of the vital role they play at the heart of their communities.

‘The RACGP is proud of the achievements of every GP honoured and of the credit they bring to themselves and the profession.’

One of the GPs recognised is South Australia’s Dr John Litt, who was awarded a member in the general division in the order of Australia, an AM, for ‘significant service to preventive medicine as an influenza specialist, and as a GP’.

‘It was surprising and very exciting, and I’m very chuffed my colleagues think that something I do is worthwhile,’ Dr Litt told newsGP.

Dr Litt hopes his award heralds a wider acknowledgement of prevention in healthcare.

‘We say prevention’s better than cure, but we don’t put our money where our mouth is,’ Dr Litt said. ‘Every time the Government thinks about prevention, hospitals need more money and I understand that – healthcare is complex, we demand high standards, there is a price to pay for that.

‘But we really haven’t got as serious about the delivery of preventive care.’
