More than 360 doctors have begun their training in the state, with 30% choosing to train in rural and regional locations.

This year, 1772 doctors nationally are beginning the AGPT Program with the RACGP.

Victoria has seen a record intake of future GPs in 2026, with 363 doctors starting their general practice training in February.

Of this cohort, 161 are registrars in the general Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program, 149 are on the rural pathway, 53 on the composite pathway, and 63 are training as Rural Generalists.

RACGP Victoria Chair Dr Anita Muñoz said the 2026 intake demonstrates growth in key training pathways, supporting the long-term stability of Victorian general practice.

‘The steady number of future GPs training in Victoria shows there is sustained demand for GP training and confidence in general practice as a career,’ she said.

‘What’s especially positive this year is the shift toward pathways that deliver direct benefits to communities outside metropolitan Melbourne.

‘Rural and composite registrars play a critical role in strengthening primary care where it’s needed most.’

The Victorian general practice registrars join 251 doctors starting their training in Western Australia, 31 in the Northern Territory, 56 in Tasmania, 359 in Queensland and 154 in South Australia.

Nationwide, 1772 doctors are beginning the AGPT Program with the RACGP in 2026.

However, with a further 145 eligible doctors missing out on training places in Victoria, RACGP President Dr Michael Wright is calling on the Federal Government to fund more GP training places.

‘The Government’s 2025–26 funding boost helped fulfil its commitment to grow the GP workforce, but demand shows we can go further,’ he said.

‘Australia needs more specialist GPs, and the RACGP is ready to train them.’
