The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) updated its Therapeutic goods advertising code (the code) on 29 June. However, the changes will not take effect until 1 January 2019 in order to allow advertisers time to become familiar with the code and alter existing advertising to meet the new requirements.

In tandem with the updated code, the TGA has created an advertising hub that contains online forms for doctors and consumers to lodge complaints about advertising.

The hub also displays information about the code for advertisers and consumers, including what kinds of advertising claims might breach the new code, the enhanced sanctions and penalties advertisers face for such breaches, and the results of previous complaints.

The TGA intends that the hub will make it easier to make complaints about advertising of therapeutic goods, as well as providing education to help protect consumers from unfair or misleading advertising.
