More than $800,000 in Australian General Practice Research Foundation funding has been announced.

General practice researchers from across Australia will share in $808,000 in Australian General Practice Research Foundation funding, supporting projects from modernising GP consultation data collection to tackling chronic disease, mental health, and workforce wellbeing.

This year, 14 grants involving 78 researchers were awarded with research topics also including a BEACH-style electronic tool to capture real-world GP consultations for policy and education and improving endometriosis management.

Other projects include expanding GP home visits, reducing burnout among rural GPs, preventing osteoporosis, auditing point-of-care and AI tools for shared decision-making, and enhancing maternal health in remote Aboriginal communities.

Professor Michael Kidd, who is Australia’s Chief Medical Officer and Patron of the Foundation, congratulated those who have been awarded a 2025 grant, as well as thanking the program’s supporters and partners.

‘Together, we are building the evidence base and supporting innovations that will strengthen general practice,’ he said.

‘I look forward to seeing how these projects translate into even better care for patients and communities right across our nation.’

With funding up almost 20% compared to 2024, major grants were awarded with the support of the Medibank Better Health Research Hub and nib foundation for:

  • BREATHE FAST – testing rapid COPD diagnosis in rural general practice
  • Scaling digital maternity care in remote general practice – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in remote areas often experiencing delays in pregnancy care
  • Supported to succeed – evaluating GP-supported binge eating eTherapy as a scalable, low-intensity intervention
The HCF Research Foundation is supporting the Occasions of Care Explained and ANalysed (OCEAN) study, investigating GP consultation patterns and their implications for patient care, while Diabetes Australia is co-funding a project that supports GPs to address the social determinants of diabetes.
