‘A uniquely rewarding career’: New GP Fellows celebrated in Cairns
A new generation of GPs came together in Far North Queensland last week to mark the start of life as RACGP Fellows.
Newly qualified specialist GPs celebrated their RACGP fellowship in Cairns last week.
Twenty-seven new specialist GPs were welcomed to the profession in an RACGP Fellowship ceremony in Cairns in Far North Queensland last Friday.
Hosted by RACGP Queensland Chair Dr Cath Hester, the occasion marked the first state in Australia to host an RACGP fellowship ceremony this year.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright was in attendance, describing the event as an ‘important milestone’ and ‘a privilege’ to attend alongside Queensland colleagues.
‘Becoming a Fellow of the RACGP represents years of dedication, study, and hands-on experience caring for patients,’ he said.
‘Our new Fellows should be immensely proud of their achievement and the vital role they will play in supporting the health of their communities.
‘Access to high-quality general practice care is essential for all Australians, no matter where they live.
‘Regional training and celebration opportunities like this ceremony help strengthen the rural and regional workforce by recognising and supporting GPs where they are needed most.’
Other attendees included RACGP Vice President Dr Ramya Raman, and two former RACGP Presidents, Dr Nicole Higgins and Professor Claire Jackson.
Dr Hester said the ceremony’s Cairns location reflects the college’s commitment to supporting GPs across Queensland by recognising their achievements in regional areas.
‘These new Fellows are well equipped to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients and communities,’ she said.
‘General practice is a uniquely rewarding career, and it’s inspiring to see the next generation of GPs ready to step into this vital role.’
