In Practice: AHPRA resources for GPs
The health regulator is hosting a series of webinars in the coming months to support GPs with all aspects of their registration.
AHPRA is running webinars on the regulation of students in health professions, how supervision works in practice, and navigating a performance notification.
This week’s In Practice also includes a campaign to raise awareness of juvenile arthritis and the importance of early diagnosis, and upcoming education sessions on dementia research and antidepressant use in young people.

Juvenile Arthritis Week
An estimated 10,000 children under 16 years and up to 30,000 people younger than 24 years have juvenile arthritis, making it one of the most common conditions affecting young Australians.
Running from 16–22 March, the 2026 theme for Juvenile Arthritis Week, ‘Kids with arthritis can’t wait’, focuses on the importance of early diagnosis and understanding of the condition, and timely access to care for children and young people living with juvenile arthritis.

Annual dementia forum
Early bird registrations for the Australian Dementia Network’s annual Dementia Research Forum, from 1–3 June in Sydney, are open until 15 April.
For a fourth consecutive year, CPD sessions will be offered for healthcare practitioners, with topics including prescribing monoclonal antibodies, insights from community practice, updates in diagnosis using blood-based biomarkers, and allied health approaches.

Navigating antidepressant use in young people

GPs are invited to join the discussion on the increasing rates of mental health disorders in young people and the increased prescribing rates of antidepressants in this cohort.
This event will discuss the role of medication in the stepped treatment approach, ensuring it is part of a comprehensive plan alongside psychological therapies and lifestyle/social strategies. The evidence base for antidepressant medication in young people will also be covered, and a look at clinical scenarios where medication might be indicated.
Attendees can discuss specifics of how to select/prescribe SSRIs, including important considerations in counselling young people regarding these medications (including potential side effects, time to effect, activation, expected duration of therapy, patient expectancy and placebo effect, dose adjustments) and cover recommended review process and deprescribing.
