Australia’s peak dementia body is seeking feedback to inform ways to improve patients’ primary care experience.

Results from a national survey are expected to support reforms to improve the primary care experience of people living with dementia.

This week’s In Practice also includes upcoming webinars from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), a chance to share insights on the practice nurse workforce, and attend the annual occupational medicine conference.

Dementia in primary care engagement strategy
Dementia Australia is developing an organisation-wide primary care strategy aiming to strengthen its impact within the primary care system, including with GPs and practice nurses.

GP feedback is being sought to inform priority actions for working with primary care. De-identified responses would also be used in advocacy to support policy changes that improve people living with dementia’s experience of primary care.

The survey is open until 5.00 pm (AEST) Wednesday 16 September, and takes approximately five minutes to complete.

AHPRA webinars
AHPRA is hosting a series of webinars in October, with registrations now open:

APNA workforce survey
The 2026 Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) workforce survey is an opportunity for GPs to have a say in the future of primary healthcare nursing. APNA wants to hear from nurses, midwives and nurse practitioners working in every primary health care setting. Experiences shared in the survey will support APNA to build a stronger workforce.

This year’s workforce survey is open until midnight on Sunday 18 October, takes 15 minutes to complete and can be captured as CPD in Florence. Non-APNA members are eligible to take part.

Practical occupational health insights for general practice
The annual Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM) Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 25–28 October.

The event provides a forum for practitioners in primary care, specialist occupational medicine, nursing and allied health to explore practical, evidence-based approaches to work-related issues, with a focus on improving patient outcomes.

GPs play an important role in managing health conditions that affect patients’ ability to work, as well as helping patients recover from work-related injury and illness. Topics of particular interest to GPs include:
  • mental health and the workplace
  • worker wellbeing, including obesity management
  • sleep disorders – screening, assessment and management
  • concussion and mild traumatic brain injury
  • whiplash injuries
  • medicinal cannabis
  • cultural safety
  • workplace site visits.
Options include full or single-day registration so attendees can focus on what’s relevant to them across the four-day program. More information and registrations are available on the ANZSOM website.
