New resource: Managing emergencies and disasters in general practice
All Australian general practices are vulnerable to an array of potentially devastating emergencies and disasters of both natural and manmade origin, now more so than ever.

While not always possible, the optimal aim is for your practice to stay operational before, during and after emergencies and disasters so that you can continue to provide essential healthcare to those in need. Having an up-to-date emergency response plan in place will help you and your team to be prepared, well stocked and ready to respond to any crisis.

The RACGP’s newly released Managing emergencies and disasters in general practice resource aims to guide practice teams through the emergency response plan development process, providing a clearer picture of what needs to be considered when developing your unique plan.

Emotional eating: Mental health considerations in obesity
Webinar: Tuesday 15 July, 7.30–8.30 pm (AEST)
CPD: 1 EA hour

Presented by Chair of RACGP Specific Interests Obesity Management Dr Terri-Lynne South and Chair of RACGP Specific Interests Psychological Medicine Dr Cathy Andronis, this webinar will discuss how to effectively utilise a biopsychosocial approach to obesity in general practice.

Achieving good biological and psychological health in obesity management requires more than just focusing on weight loss.

This webinar will explore how GPs can empower patients to manage their eating holistically.

Using a trauma-informed approach, addressing ‘fat shaming’, body image and self-esteem in individuals with obesity necessitates confidently exploring mental health factors, including eating disorders, as well as physical health and the influence of our ‘obesogenic society’.

GP counselling skills such as motivational interviewing and psycho education are effective in facilitating behaviour change.

One week to go: Abstract submissions for GP25 close 16 July
There’s just one week left to submit your abstract for GP25. Taking place in Brisbane from 14–16 November, this year’s conference explores the theme ‘Brighter future together’.

The RACGP is looking for submissions that reflect the depth and diversity of general practice – from clinical education and innovation to research and training.

Help shape this year’s program and submit your abstract here before 11.59 pm, Wednesday 16 July.

GP Research Noticeboard
The GP Research Noticeboard presents surveys and research projects that GPs can participate in.

Current projects listed include ‘Ordering herpes simplex virus type specific serology for asymptomatic patients’ and ‘Medical abortion in general practice: Using guidelines for evidence-based care’.

Members can also submit their research projects to the noticeboard to invite participation from the general practice community.

Upcoming Medicare compliance webinars
The RACGP will host two webinars on Medicare compliance in July. These will be facilitated by RACGP President Dr Michael Wright and presented by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (DoHDA) and the Professional Services Review (PSR).

These sessions will outline what GPs need to know about the Medicare compliance process, compliance priorities, item numbers that commonly prompt compliance investigations, and where to find support and information.

Both webinars are free for both members and non-members to attend.
