In Practice: General Practice in Addiction Conference
GPs can gain practical skills and evidence-based strategies to help patients impacted by alcohol and other drugs at the upcoming event.
The RACGP’s addiction medicine conference will arm GPs with the skills and confidence to support patients impacted by alcohol and other drug use.
This week’s In Practice also includes upcoming CPD events for upskilling in children’s health and early career GPs in Western Australia, and a GP resource for providing care for refugee patients.
GPADD Conference
The RACGP’s 2026 General Practice in Addiction (GPADD) Conference, held in Melbourne on 28–29 August, brings together GPs and health professionals to develop practical skills and explore evidence-based approaches to supporting patients impacted by alcohol and other drug use.
Attendees can connect with peers, take part in hands-on workshops and hear from leading experts sharing insights to apply in everyday practice.

Specific populations resource: Refugee patients
The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) has developed a new suite of resources to assist GPs in providing inclusive, trauma-informed and culturally safe care to patients from diverse backgrounds.
The refugee and asylum seeker patients resource offers advice on providing trauma-informed and culturally safe care to refugee patients, including practical tips to build trust, ask sensitive questions respectfully, and recognise when to proceed with caution.
The resource also features tailored information around the unique challenges refugee patients face, such as migration history, resettlement concerns, visas, accessing interpreters, intersectionality, specific administrative processes and more.

This webinar will focus on implementing support goals for children with attention and behaviour challenges, with practical tips for reviewing progress and adapting strategies over time. Panellists will also explore how GPs can support families to navigate service pathways, as well as connect families with the right resources to ensure care is coordinated, holistic and strengths based.
