In Practice: Medical Training Survey now open
AHPRA’s annual survey gives an insight into experiences across medical specialties and helps to amplify the voice of GPs in training.
The Medical Training Survey is an opportunity for GPs in training to help shape the future of medical education by sharing their experiences of workplace culture and supervision.
This week’s In Practice also includes a new quick claiming guide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veteran patients, applications open for the RACGP Future Leaders Program and PhD scholarships for GP researchers, and upcoming clinical skills CPD events.
Medical training survey
The 2026 Medical Training Survey is now open, giving doctors in training across Australia the opportunity to help shape the future of medical education by sharing their experiences of training, workplace culture and supervision.
Commissioned by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), the results are used to identify strengths and areas for improvement in training, inform accreditation and workforce planning nationwide. Each year, the survey’s results help drive improvements in training and shape the choices of doctors in training.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans: Claiming guide
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has released a new First Nations Veterans Claiming Quick Guide, designed to support GPs and other primary care providers by:
- outlining key item numbers available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans and the appropriate MBS and DVA item numbers for billing
- including a worked example illustrating how care and claiming may occur over a 12‑month period.
The guide aims to make it easier for providers to navigate available item numbers and support billing for high-quality, comprehensive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans.
The two-page printable guide, along with a broader suite of quick guides and provider tools, is
available via the DVA website.
Foundation PhD top-up scholarships
GPs or GPs in training undertaking a PhD or preparing to begin one focused on Australian general practice can apply for top-up scholarships with the
RACGP Foundation – the philanthropic arm of the college.
The Foundation aims to grow evidence that improves patient care, strengthens general practice, and shapes the future of healthcare in Australia by supporting clinicians to pursue research careers. These scholarships play an important role in building the next generation of GP researchers.
Applications for the top-up scholarships open 24 August and close 5 October.
General Practice in Addiction Conference
Early bird tickets have now been extended for the 2026 GPADD Conference, running across 28–29 August, Attendees can develop practical skills and learn evidence-based approaches to supporting patients impacted by alcohol and other drugs. Free National Guide workshops continue across Australia
Following strong engagement across states and territories, the National Guide Workshop series continues with upcoming events in regional New South Wales and Victoria.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health leaders and experienced clinicians will explore practical applications of the
National guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to support GPs to strengthen delivery of culturally safe preventive care and earn 6.5 CPD hours. Places are limited – register below:

Build the skills to lead the future of general practice
Applications are now open for the RACGP Future Leaders Program, offering GPs the opportunity to earn CPD hours through a structured leadership development experience, strengthen leadership skills, and expand their impact within general practice.
Fully funded by the RACGP, the program provides expert facilitation, specialist guidance, practical resources and the opportunity to connect with a cohort of future GP leaders.
Participants can develop the confidence and capability to lead change, advocate effectively and help shape the future of general practice.
