This week’s In Practice also includes nominations for the RACGP Faculty elections and expressions of interest to join the AJGP Journal Advisory Committee, and upcoming CPD events.
 
President election voting closes 21 August
Voting is open for the 2026 RACGP President election until 12.00 pm (AEST), Friday 21 August.
 
Eligible voters are RACGP Fellows, members and GPs in training, who will receive an email from the Returning Officer at OGL Group containing a unique voting link. Members are encouraged to review the candidate information before casting their vote.

RACGP Faculty elections
Nominations for the 2026 RACGP Faculty elections close on Friday 28 August. 
 
Faculty Councils play an important role in advising the RACGP Board and elevating members’ perspectives. Elected council members help ensure local and faculty specific issues are reflected in college advocacy and decision-making. Serving on a Faculty Council is also an opportunity to influence the future direction of general practice and the college. Candidates will be announced on 7 September, with voting for contested electorates opening the same day.

AJGP Journal Advisory Committee EOIs
GPs interested in helping to shape the future of the Australian Journal of General Practice (AJGP) are invited to submit an expression of interest to join the publication’s new Journal Advisory Committee. The closing date to submit an EOI has been extended to Friday 28 August. More information is available on the AJGP website.
 
Medical abortion in general practice

GPs looking to strengthen their understanding of medical abortion care can join RACGP Specific Interests Sexual and Reproductive Health Chair Dr Sara Whitburn and sexual health expert Dr Karen Freilich, for an evidence-based overview of early medical abortion, including:

• patient assessment
• counselling
• referral pathways
• shared care
• management of complications
• contraception
• post-abortion care.

The webinar will also cover Victoria’s legal and ethical framework for abortion care, reproductive coercion screening, and opportunities for GPs to incorporate patient-centred abortion care into their practice.
 
ANZSOM Annual Scientific Meeting
The Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM) Annual Scientific Meeting is an annual event for health professionals involved in the prevention, assessment and management of work-related injury and illness. This year’s conference takes place across 25–28 October at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
 
GPs, occupational physicians, nurses or allied health professionals can gain practical, evidence-based insights to support clinical decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and help people stay healthy and engaged at work.
 
The four-day program includes a diverse range of presentations, interactive workshops, site visits and networking opportunities, providing valuable learning for clinicians working across primary care and occupational health. Key topics include:

• mental health and worker wellbeing
• sleep disorders
• collaboration between occupational hygiene, health and medicine professionals
• medicinal cannabis
• concussion and mild traumatic brain injury
• permanent impairment and independent medical examinations
• cultural safety.
