The rural New South Wales town of Orange has played host to the latest National Guide workshop, an initiative bringing together healthcare professionals to strengthen preventive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The event, delivered by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) and RACGP, is one of 13 workshops held across Australia, supporting the implementation of the National guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Friday’s workshop saw healthcare professionals from Orange’s general practices and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, as well as community representatives, gather to discuss what can be implemented locally.

RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Chair Dr Karen Nicholls said the workshops demonstrate the value of partnership and community led approaches to healthcare.

‘The National Guide supports healthcare services to deliver prevention and early intervention that is culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,’ she said.

‘These workshops are helping strengthen the health workforce and improve access to care that supports healthier lives and healthier communities.’

The fourth edition of the National Guide, which was released in 2024, was designed by NACCHO, the RACGP and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health experts across the country.

It offers practical guidance across 21 health topics, including child health, preconception and pregnancy care, diabetes, health impacts of racism and climate change.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said the National Guide is an ‘invaluable resource’ to help GPs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, and broader healthcare teams provide culturally safe care.

‘By bringing healthcare professionals together to share knowledge and learn from each other, these workshops will help ensure communities across Australia benefit from the latest evidence and best practice,’ he said.

Orange’s workshop marks the halfway point of the six-month series, which has already seen strong engagement at events in Cairns, Brisbane, Melbourne, Broome, and Darwin.

The next National Guide Workshop will be held in Shepparton, Victoria, on 30 September.
