A new step-by-step guide to making insurance claims aimed at helping GPs and practice owners recover after disaster strikes has been launched.
It comes following severe floods sweeping the Mid North Coast and Hunter regions in New South Wales, and natural disasters affecting many communities in Queensland, including general practices.
The guide includes practical information on initiating and formalising a claim, as well as details on claim reviews, negotiation and settlement.
Dr Rashmi Sharma, Chair of the RACGP Expert Committee – Funding and Health System Reform, said the guide is designed to help GPs navigate a process that can appear overwhelming – particularly after events such as those affecting regions of NSW and Queensland.
‘When disaster strikes, GPs are not just clinicians, we’re small business owners too,’ she told newsGP.
‘Knowing how to lodge an insurance claim properly can make all the difference to getting your practice back on its feet.
‘Insurance paperwork is the last thing on your mind after damage or loss – but taking the right steps early can reduce delays and disputes down the track.’
The guide also provides guidance on developing an asset register and how to seek financial hardship support.
‘Clear documentation and a well-maintained asset register aren’t just good admin – they’re your lifeline in a crisis,’ Dr Sharma said.
‘Being prepared can fast-track recovery when every day counts.
‘Many GPs aren’t aware of the financial hardship support available through insurers and government grants.’
More than 6000 insurance claims have already been filed so far due to the recent floods in NSW, with the tally expected to rise.
The guide, ‘Lodging an insurance claim – information for GPs and practice owners’, is now available on the RACGP website.
