RACGP President candidates revealed

Living in Melbourne, Perth, and regional Queensland – three GPs are in the running to become the RACGP’s next President.
 
The candidates were revealed on Friday, with the winner to take over the role from current President, Dr Michael Wright, in November.
 
In ballot order, the three candidates are:
 
Dr Anita Muñoz
Dr Muñoz has spent 25 years as a GP, practice owner, medical educator and has served as RACGP Victoria Chair for the past six years. She has been involved in a long list of college advocacy campaigns leading to funding and clinical changes and founded the GPs@Parliament initiative.
 
Dr Muñoz has had several government advisory roles and committee appointments, including Victorian Department of Health COVID-19 Primary Care Advisory Committee and the Victorian Chief Medical Officer’s Advisory Committee. Her presidential priorities include fair funding, self-determination, real recognition for GPs, and keeping the GP at the centre of patient care.
 
‘I am a GP just like you. I’m still in the room with you. Every day I’m balancing complexity against time, navigating red tape that suffocates good care, and seeing clinical judgement undermined by policies designed by people who have never done our job.’

Dr Gavin Colthart
Dr Colthart has worked for the past six years as a part-time GP and Senior Medical Officer covering the Magnetic Island Health Service, and since 2025, with the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. He originally qualified in New Zealand before moving to the United Kingdom, and has a longstanding interest in remote and rural medicine, having trained and worked as an expedition medic on remote marine science projects.
 
Dr Colthart worked as a healthcare research specialist for the UK Parliament, was a member of the Professional Executive Committee of the Brighton and Hove Primary Care Trust, and has 14 years of experience in healthcare management in New Zealand and Europe, including roles as an IT consultant, senior healthcare manager, and medical editor.
 
‘As doctors, as GPs, we have a lot more ethical and moral authority than we realise. Time to use it.’

Dr Ramya Raman
Dr Raman has served as RACGP Vice President since 2024 and WA Chair since 2021. She is a GP and Practice Principal at The Garden Family Medical Clinic Piara Waters, as well as being a Director of the RACGP Joint Colleges Training Services and Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health, and is currently the Discipline Head of General Practice at the University of Notre Dame.
 
Dr Raman has led statewide advocacy efforts to secure written payroll tax and ADHD reforms. If elected as President, her priorities include spending members’ fees wisely, an independent MBS pricing authority, and strengthening international medical graduate and Fellowship pathways.
 
‘The RACGP must be clear about what it protects, ambitious about what it builds, and disciplined about where it focuses its member resources.’

Nominations for candidates have now closed and the campaigning period has begun.

The voting period for the RACGP President election is from Tuesday 11 August, 12.00 pm (AEST) until Friday 21 August, 12.00 pm (AEST). 
 
Eligible voters are Fellows, members and registrar associates of the RACGP – voters will receive an email with details to access a unique voting link to submit their vote in the election. 
 
A Presidential candidate Q&A webinar will be held on Tuesday 18 August at 7.30 pm (AEST).
 
The President-elect will be announced on Monday 24 August, with the new President taking office on Thursday 19 November at the RACGP’s Annual General Meeting.
 
Dr Wright said it is a role he has loved over the past two years.
 
‘It’s very exciting – I really enjoy being the voice of GPs and the college and also being the voice of GPs externally, so talking to politicians, policy makers, other stakeholders, departments of government in state and federal areas,’ he said.
 
‘It’s a blast, but it’s a lot of hard work.’
