RACGP releases 2025.2 exam cycle results
The assessors of each Fellowship exam say creating ‘a targeted study plan’ can significantly improve exam readiness and success.
More than 1000 candidates sat both the latest KFP and AKT exams in a step closer to Fellowship of the RACGP.
The RACGP has released results from its latest Fellowship exams, demonstrating similar pass rates from an increased number of candidates who sat the exam since the previous cycle.
Published on Friday, the Key Feature Problem (KFP) and Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) 2025.2 public exam reports detail pass rates and candidates’ performance.
Each had similarly high pass rates, with the KFP at 79.57% out of 1160 candidates, and the AKT at 79.41% out of 1049 candidates. Both had increases in the number of candidates who sat the exam since the previous 2025.1 cycle.
RACGP KFP National Assessment Advisor, Dr Emilie Pitter, welcomed the results.
‘We can see there has been a significant increase in the number of candidates sitting the KFP this cycle [compared to 900 in the previous cycle],’ she told newsGP.
Last year, the college announced changes to the KFP exam to start from the 2025.2 cycle, with the exam to consist of 70 scenarios, each with a multiple-selection question, with short-answer questions removed.
In developing the new multiple-selection question format, Dr Pitter says the gplearning exam support online (ESO) modules were updated to provide information and examples about the new format.
The 2025 self-assessment progress tests (SAPTs) and KFP practice exam questions were also updated to the new format, with questions ‘going through the same writing and review process as those in the actual exam’.
‘It is fantastic to see so many candidates utilising the SAPTs – an invaluable resource for candidates, giving opportunity to complete exam-standard questions and receive detailed explanations about the answers,’ she said.
‘Around one third of 2025.2 candidates accessed the updated KFP ESO modules and around 70% accessed the practice exam ahead of the 2025.2 KFP. I would strongly encourage all candidates preparing for the KFP to complete the ESO modules and the practice exam.
‘The practice exam reflects the format and content breadth of the real exam, and is an excellent opportunity to practice exam time management.’
Meanwhile, RACGP AKT National Assessment Advisor Dr Sharnti Caulley compared the results of the AKT 2025.2 to the fewer 765 candidates who sat the previous 2025.1 cycle.
She told newsGP the overall mean score of candidates was slightly lower this cycle compared to the last, but the pass rate remained consistent.
‘Notably, 29% of candidates achieved scores in the highest band,’ Dr Caulley said.
‘A common trend in AKT results was also seen in this cycle with first-time sitters having a significantly higher pass rate (85.9%), while those sitting the exam for the fourth time or more had a reduced success rate of 31%.’
‘The AKT reflects the wide-ranging clinical knowledge required to deliver high-quality care in Australian general practice.
‘One of the most effective strategies for candidates is to identify and address their knowledge gaps. Collaborating with a supervisor, medical educator, or study group to create a targeted study plan can significantly improve exam readiness and success.’
Dr Pitter agrees the candidate pass rate is highest for those in their first attempt of the KFP, as per previous cycles, highlighting the importance of being prepared for the exam and candidates making use of the support resources provided by the college.
‘The RACGP has a range of resources and support materials to assist candidates to prepare for the exams,’ she said.
‘I would encourage candidates, their supervisors and medical educators to review the 2025.2 public exam report.
‘As for previous exam cycles, this contains information about the pass mark and rate, and feedback about common errors using question examples within the exam.’
The KFP public exam report has also been updated this cycle to include a table showing every KFP question topic and associated curriculum contextual unit, reflecting the breadth of content within the exam and demonstrating how the KFP assesses across the core and contextual units of the RACGP curriculum.
‘It’s essential that candidates are including “non-clinical” topics in their exam preparation as well as the clinical, as they progress towards Fellowship and unsupervised practice,’ Dr Pitter said.
