Showcase connects future GPs with rural practices

The RACGP has hosted its fourth Rural Showcase, bringing together registrars, rural general practices and health organisations from across New South Wales to highlight the diverse career opportunities in regional Australia.

Launched in 2024, the Parramatta-based event connects metro-based and composite registrars with practices in areas of workforce need.

RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman, who attended the Showcase, said building strong connections between registrars and rural practices is essential to strengthening the rural GP workforce.

‘Rural general practice offers registrars the opportunity to build broad clinical skills, develop meaningful connections with communities, and establish rewarding careers,’ she said.

‘Events such as the Rural Showcase are an important part of connecting future GPs with rural practices.’

A key feature of the Showcase, the rural panel discussion, gave metro-based registrars the opportunity to hear directly from rural doctors about the realities of practising in regional communities.
 
The discussion aimed to broaden registrars’ perspectives, encourage greater interest in rural placements, and showcase the potential for rewarding long-term careers.
 
‘The Rural Showcase is more than just an event – it is part of a growing commitment to strengthen Australia’s rural health workforce and inspire the next generation of rural GPs,’ Dr Hoffman said. 
 
The Showcase follows last week’s announcement of the Medical Board of Australia’s accreditation of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and the RACGP’s respective Rural Generalist training programs.
