Vale Professor Peter Mudge

Renowned scholar of general practice, Emeritus Professor Peter Mudge AM, has passed away.

Professor Mudge worked in aid of the profession he loved for more than five decades.

A Life Fellow of the RACGP, Professor Mudge was a champion and advocate for the RACGP Foundation and the field of general practice research.

The Peter Mudge Medal was established in recognition of his work. The award is presented annually at the RACGP’s conference to the person who has most advanced the discipline of general practice and whose original research has the most potential to influence the daily work of Australia’s GPs.

Professor Mudge held many roles in the RACGP over the years, chairing the Research Committee of Council in the 1980s and acting as a member of the college’s first ethics committee in 1985.

He was Chair of the RACGP Council (now Board) between 2003 and 2010.

Professor Mudge received an Honorary Doctorate of Science, honoris causa, from Flinders University in South Australia, and received the RACGP’s highest accolade, the Rose–Hunt Award, in 1998.

As the RACGP Foundation’s Patron, Professor Mudge continually advocated for increased support for general practice research.

Peter preceded me in my current position in at the University of Tasmania, a state he loved very much and returned to. We worked alongside each other for a year in a very productive relationship. His work on Ross River virus and promotion of research in general practice marked him as a pioneer. To a life well lived and an Australian community who have benefited from it (and recognised it in its honours list) I salute you. My condolences to Valarie and family.

I remember Peter contributing in so many ways over the years. In various iterations of the RACGP research committee, in the research foundation, in discussion about academic registrars. He was always very generous with his time. Rest in peace, Peter!

I may not have always agreed with him but there is no doubt that he has had a major impact on General Practice & academic General Practice in particular.
