Webinar delves into Medicare’s complexities
The upcoming session will explain its fundamentals and compliance essentials to GPs in training and providers new to the system.
A webinar will provide an overview of the key principles of Medicare, how the DoHDA supports the sustainability of the system, and the legislative obligations of providers.
Navigating the complexities of Medicare can be daunting for any GP, but an upcoming webinar aims to lessen that learning curve.
This month, the RACGP’s Understanding Medicare: Fundamentals and compliance essentials for GPs webinar will delve into the system, how it works, and GPs’ obligations.
The session is designed primarily for GPs in training and providers who are new to the system, but all are welcome to attend, including practice managers.
Dr Tony Bayliss, RACGP Regulation and Compliance Working Group Chair, will facilitate the session presented by Dr Kris Kandasamy, GP and Senior Medical Adviser at the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (DoHDA).
‘This session is about the fundamentals and sustainability of Medicare, providers’ administerial and legal requirements, and its eligibility,’ Dr Kandasamy told newsGP.
‘The session is intended for new providers and providers who wish to refresh their knowledge of Medicare’s requirements.
‘Topics include requirements for bulk billing, record keeping, practice incentives, voluntary acknowledgement of incorrect payments and the Department’s compliance strategies and priorities.’
Earlier this year, the DoHDA released its compliance watchlist for 2026, revealing it is monitoring telehealth, care and management plans, claiming MBS services while overseas, open and uncertified PBS claims, and inappropriate claiming of PBS medicines.
But confusion remains around Medicare and where to find information, with a 2023 newsGP poll finding just 13% of respondents are confident about how to find information on Medicare requirements and billing.
In response, the webinar will provide an overview of the key principles of Medicare, how the DoHDA supports the sustainability of the system, and the legislative obligations of providers, including:
- Medicare fundamentals
- the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)
- levels of MBS benefits
- compliance essentials
- compliance strategy and priorities
- where to get help and support.

Understanding Medicare: Fundamentals and compliance essentials for GPs webinar will be held on Wednesday, 15 July from 7.00 – 8.00 pm (AEST) and is free to RACGP members and non-members.
