Great Palm Island is the largest island in the Palm Island group and the
only one with a significant population of permanent residents, most of whom are
Aboriginal. The language name "Bwgcolman", meaning "one people
from many groups", is derived from an Aboriginal language of one of the
earliest groups of people removed from the mainland and settled there from
1918. In the 2016 census, Palm Island had a population of 2 455 people.
The purpose of this position is to provide
high quality clinical services, and in particular ACRRM trainees and junior
doctor supervision and training, as a part of the multidisciplinary team
delivering integrated primary, community and secondary level health services to
the Indigenous community of Palm Island. Cultural safety is paramount. The
medical officers of Joyce Palmer Health Service (JPHS) will work in the Palm
Island Primary Care Centre on rotation and they will assist in maintaining
functional connections between the Centres to ensure continuity of care for
patients.
JPHS
has 15 beds, a 2 bay Emergency Department, a satellite haemodialysis unit,
pharmacy and x-ray (provided by licenced x-ray operators). The Palm Island
Health Action Plan 2018 – 2028 guides delivery of comprehensive services.
Primary health care services are delivered from a separate location, Palm
Island Primary Health Care Centre, with its own leadership in collaboration
with JPHS.
