Great Palm Island is the largest island in the Palm Island group and the only one with a significant population of permanent residents, most of whom are Aboriginal. The language name "Bwgcolman", meaning "one people from many groups", is derived from an Aboriginal language of one of the earliest groups of people removed from the mainland and settled there from 1918.
