Why did you choose an Academic Post?
- It was the teaching and medical education aspects of the academic post that sparked my interest initially, and subsequently led me to apply.
What are you doing now?
- I am currently working at the Department of General Practice at the University of Adelaide, supervised by Professor Nigel Stocks. I am the 19th RACGP Academic Post registrar they have supervised; it is a very well supported placement and is a salaried position at university award level.
- I have 0.5 FTE Academic post (with equal parts teaching and research), and 0.5 FTE clinical work in community.
Why would you recommend an Academic Post?
- I really enjoy the variation in my week – research/teaching and my clinical hours. I have gained a far better understanding of the processes that lead to guidelines and practice recommendations, which has led me to enjoy my clinical days more.
- Even if research isn't "your thing" it's a great position to get exposure to this world; for people considering portfolio careers or who want to add non-clinical diversity to their working lives as a GP, this is a fantastic pathway to start this. It is also a role that is not grant dependent.
- funding to go to two conferences a year by the RACGP (inc. flights and accommodation) is invaluable - the RACGP picks the conferences all Academic Post registrars attend together. This year, the conferences are AAAPC in Melbourne and WONCA in Sydney. There is also professional development money ($8K) for you to utilise.
Getting ready to apply? We encourage you to watch the pre-application webinar or visit the program webpage. Applications close Monday 17th July 2023.
