Welcome back

We hope you had a restful break and we're looking forward to working with you and supporting our registrars, supervisors and practice teams in the delivery of GP training throughout the year ahead.

Our Western Australian registrars commenced the 2024.1 semester this week, with Tasmania and Queensland due to start next Monday. All other states will commence on 5 February.

The success of GP training is only possible through the dedication, and contribution to general practice and our communities, by our supervisors, practice managers, medical educators, registrars and program teams.

Updated supervisor and practice manager resources

We’ve updated supervisor and practice manager resources to reflect the latest developments in GP training. Access them via our website for practical advice on how to support your registrars, updates on regulatory requirements or information on training tools.  

Please note that the AGPT practice and supervisor handbook is still in the process of being updated. The new version will be shared with you in late January.

Important: Medicare provider number for 2024.1

A friendly reminder to check that your registrar/s have received their Medicare provider number (MPN) with full billing rights, and that they have:  

1. shared this with you  

2. entered these details into their TMS profile  

3. added their bank account details to PRODA.  

Curated user journeys on gplearning

We’re excited to launch new functionality in gplearning on 22 January, with curated content for specific learners in GP training and easier links to the RACGP curriculum and syllabus e-learning content. The curated journeys will be available for registrars and supervisors at the top of the gplearning landing page for easy reference and are in addition to the usual functions gplearning offers to members. Please encourage your registrars and supervisors to log on to the gplearning platform to have a look and let us know what they think.

Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) changes

The new year brings an end to some temporary MBS items and extensions to others, as well as increases to the Medicare safety net. Read the full list on our website, but in summary: 

• Smoking cessation items are not being extended, but these services can be provided through general consultation items 

• Several COVID-19 measures are being extended, including item 93716 to prescribe COVID-19 antiviral medication via telephone 

• A new exemption to the established clinical relationship requirement will be introduced for specified telehealth services provided at eligible urgent care clinics 

• Pregnancy support telehealth items have been extended along with blood borne viruses, sexual, or reproductive health service telehealth items 

• The Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) will increase from $531.70 to $560.40. The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) will increase from $770.30 to $811.80 for concessional individuals and families and from $2,414.00 to $2,544.30 for non-concessional individuals and families.

2024 Australian Medicines Handbook and Therapeutic Guidelines available for registrars

We’re excited to announce that, as of semester one 2024, all AGPT registrars will have access to the Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH) and the Electronic Therapeutic Guidelines (eTG) via the TMS. 

We’ve received a lot of feedback over the first year of RACGP-led training regarding this, and as was the plan, the Point of Care Decision support tool offerings have been reviewed for 2024. 

The RACGP remains committed to equipping registrars with best practice resources under the guidance of our members and the Medical Education Team.
