Exploring the benefits of CGM in type 2 diabetes
SPONSORED: An expanding evidence-base is creating a compelling rationale for increased use of continuous glucose monitoring.
How does continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) compare to blood glucose monitoring (BGM or SMBG)?
How does continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) compare to blood glucose monitoring (BGM or SMBG)?
A blood glucose meter provides a manual glucose reading at a single point in time and requires finger pricks to access glucose data.
It has no alerts that can help warn of highs or lows and does not show glucose trends.
However, CGM offers real-time readings which help ensure patients always know their glucose levels with a glance at a compatible device*.
Dexcom offers optional and customisable glucose alerts so patients can be made aware of high or low glucose events.
The power of CGM
Dexcom CGM offers real-time insights into lifestyle choices and their impact on glucose levels, encouraging positive and meaningful behaviour change.
Participants in a study credited CGM use with:
- making healthier lifestyle choices (90%)
- understanding how their diet affected their glucose (87%)
- increased likelihood to walk or exercise in response to rising glucose values (47.5%).
Dexcom CGM can improve glycaemic outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes
A six-month, prospective, interventional, single-arm study in 38 patients with type 2 diabetes with no exclusion criteria related to treatment regimen
found that use of CGM was associated with:
- a 2.4% decrease in HbA1c
- an increase in the number of individuals meeting a target HbA1c of <7% from 0.4% at baseline to 54% at six months.
