Almost half of Australian women have experienced violence since the age of 15, according to statistics released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The health of Australia’s females also revealed that 5.3% of Australia’s 12 million women had experienced violence in the last 12 months, with the highest rates among women aged 55 and older (14%) and the lowest for women aged 18–24 (11%). In addition, 17% had experienced partner violence since the age of 15, 19% had experienced stalking, 25% had experienced emotional abuse by a partner since the age of 15, and 48% had experienced sexual harassment.

In order to support GPs’ vital role in working with patients affected by abuse and violence, the RACGP has developed ‘Professional development program on family abuse and violence’ for gplearning.

The program looks at the prevalence of family violence in the community, as well as the social complexities and dynamics that contribute to violence against women, and is designed to help GPs and practice teams work together and link with other services. GPs who take part in the program will learn how to better use their communication, risk-assessment and care management in the context of family violence.

‘Professional development program on family abuse and violence’ is a Category 2 QI&CPD activity. Log into gplearning to learn more and to access the program.
