AHPRA cuts fees for practitioners taking parental leave
GPs who have taken six months of parental, disability, or carer’s leave can soon apply for a 30% rebate on their annual registration.
AHPRA will also review its pro-rata approach to fees, with this expected to be handed down by November 2025.
Practitioners who take parental, disability or carer’s leave will soon be able to apply for a 30% rebate on their annual registration fees, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) announced on Monday.
Coming into effect on 1 July 2025, the rebate will apply to annual registration fees for practitioners who have taken leave for at least six months in the 2024–25 registration year, which spans 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025.
This would result in a saving of $308 for a medical practitioner with general registration.
AHPRA CEO Martin Fletcher said the change was designed to provide relief for practitioners and is a first step in a range of measures to make its fees system more ‘flexible and responsive’.
‘We have listened to the sector and the concerns of practitioners and today is an important first step to address the issues of fee relief for those on parental leave,’ Mr Fletcher said.
‘At a time of cost-of-living pressures, we recognise the current fee arrangements can have a big impact on practitioners who are parents or are pregnant, and those who have disability or carer responsibilities, as they may be required to take extended leave away from practice.’
AHPRA also announced a further review will begin looking at a wider pro-rata approach to fees, with this expected to be handed down by November 2025 and its recommendations coming into effect by 1 July 2026.
‘AHPRA is keen to identify other areas where we can streamline fee arrangements for the benefit of practitioners,’ Mr Fletcher said.
Monday’s announcement comes after AHPRA revealed earlier this year that registration to the Medical Board of Australia would rise by $32 in 2024–25, up to $1027.
