After last year’s survey helped create tangible changes, GPs are urged to once again help shape the future of general practice.

The 2025 Health of the Nation survey will close at 11.59 pm on Sunday 4 May.

GPs from all corners of Australia are urged to share their experiences, their concerns, and their hopes for the future of general practice as part of the 2025 Health of the Nation survey.

Opening on Thursday, the RACGP’s annual survey sheds light on exactly what GPs are experiencing on the ground and directly influences the advocacy direction of the college.

Since its beginnings in 2017, the high-profile, annual insight into the state of general practice has gone on to create tangible changes for GPs and their profession.

Last year, the report helped the RACGP secure historic commitments from major political parties to match wages and leave entitlements for GPs in training.

In 2025, the survey’s topics of interest are multidisciplinary team care and preventive health activities.

The Health of the Nation survey is open to RACGP Fellows, vocationally registered members, Fellowed and vocationally registered CPD-only participants, and GPs in training.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright is encouraging all those eligible to complete the survey and share their views on the state of general practice.

‘The data we collect from this survey is invaluable in describing the issues that GPs are facing,’ he told newsGP.

‘The results directly impact the RACGP’s priorities and helps us better advocate for our members.

‘We want to know how you feel about the future of general practice, what needs to change, the red tape you encounter, what excites you and what frustrates you.’

Last year, the Health of the Nation was launched at Parliament House in Canberra and was met with much political and media attention upon its release.

Evidence collected throughout the 2025 survey will include GPs’ concerns for the future of the profession, any red tape keeping GPs away from providing clinical care, frustrations with digital systems that do not integrate, funding for multidisciplinary care, workload and burnout.

Dr Wright said that given past survey results have gone on to create benefits for GPs, and with a Federal Election on the horizon, Health of the Nation is now more important than ever.

‘For eight editions now, the Health of the Nation survey and its results have had major impacts on Australia’s healthcare landscape – both in acknowledging the challenges in our health system and highlighting the role of GPs as a solution,’ he said.

‘In the middle of a Federal Election with healthcare at its centre, there has never been a more important time for GPs to speak out for our profession, our patients and the healthcare system more broadly.’

The 2025 Health of the Nation survey will close at 11.59 pm on Sunday 4 May.

Those who complete the survey, along with a bonus question, have the chance to win a free 12-month RACGP membership for 2025–26.

Members who complete the survey will also get access to a new CPD activity to reflect on their experience and ways of working within multidisciplinary teams.
