All practice clinicians need to connect to the Prescription Delivery Service by 30 September to continue prescribing eligible medications.

This week’s In Practice also includes details on notifications for acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, as well as webinars for GPs to learn more about upcoming workplace laws, endometriosis, and obesity.

eRx Script Exchange registration
GPs are reminded to register with eRx Script Exchange by 30 September to continue prescribing eligible medicines electronically.

The Australian Government has committed continued investment for prescription delivery services and enhancements which support the exchange of almost 300 million prescriptions each year. The national Prescription Delivery Service (PDS) launched on 1 July 2023 and requires GPs to connect to the PDS by 30 September 2023 to continue prescribing eligible medicines.

Practices not connected to eRx Script Exchange will need to register each clinician as soon as possible on eRx. Practices will also need to check with their prescribing software provider if there are any software updates to perform.

For practices already connected to eRx Script Exchange, no action is required at this time. For those unsure, contact the prescribing software provider for more information.

Notification of RHD and ARF
On 31 July, acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) became routine notifiable conditions in Victoria.

Both ARF and RHD can occur as a complication of infection with the group A Streptococcus bacterium, but are not themselves infectious diseases. Medical practitioners who reasonably believe a patient has, or may have, ARF or RHD must notify the Victorian Department of Health within five business days.

The Department is also recommending that all cases of RHD must be notified, including both newly diagnosed and pre-existing disease. Medical practitioners can notify using the Communicable Diseases online notification tool or by downloading and completing the ARF/RHD notification form and returning by post or fax.

Further information is available on the Department of Health website.
