New South Wales is spending big on health.

The NSW Government’s big-spending budget is its last before the state goes to the polls in March.

The budget includes $8 billion allocated for capital works for 40 hospitals across Australia’s most populous state, and $1 billion for 950 more nurses and 300 more doctors in the state’s hospitals.

The 300 new doctors will be employed in general medicine, palliative care, psychiatry, endocrinology, haematology, medical oncology, geriatrics, dermatology and addiction medicine.

Liverpool Hospital, located in a fast-growing south-western suburb, will get a new $740 million health, research and education precinct.

Mental health gets $700 million to plan and begin building new specialist units for children, teenagers and mothers with babies, as well as upgrades to existing facilities. In addition, 260 new ‘step-up, step-down’ community-based beds will be brought in to help long-term mental health patients’ transition from hospital.

More than 100 new physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists, as well as another 260 mental health workers, will be employed.
