General practice researchers from across Australia will share in the funding, with projects including diabetes, economics, and GP retirement.

In 2024, 14 RACGP Foundation Grants were awarded to 58 researchers across the country.

Nearly $660,000 in funding has been awarded to general practice researchers, as the full list of RACGP Foundation Grant 2024 recipients is revealed.

This year, 14 grants were awarded to 58 researchers, with their projects ranging from diabetes to family violence, miscarriage, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and chronic disease.

The largest grant, worth $250,000 and supported by the nib foundation, was awarded to the research project T2D - take 2: diabetes, led by Associate Professor Ralph Audehm and aims to help newly diagnosed patients achieve remission through a structured diet and exercise program.

A grant worth $114,000, co-funded by the HCF Research Foundation, was awarded to research into the co-design of services for people with high healthcare service utilisation, and Therapeutic Guidelines sponsored more than $76,000 for research into the implementation of medical abortion into general practice.

RACGP Foundation Program Manager Lisa Colquhoun told newsGP the Foundation is ‘very proud to support these innovative research projects’.

‘Each has the potential to shape everyday general practice and address the diverse healthcare needs of patients and communities across Australia,’ she said.

‘Despite being at the heart of Australian healthcare, general practice receives less than 2% of national medical research funding, underscoring the crucial role our grants play in bridging this significant funding gap.

‘We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our partners and supporters who make these grants possible.’

The grants and awards are funded by donations from RACGP members and the public, and through partnerships with the nib foundation, HCF Research Foundation, Therapeutic Guidelines, Diabetes Australia, BOQ Specialist, and RACGP’s Western Australia faculty.
