A new reflective writing workshop will aim to improve GP wellbeing.

This week’s In Practice also includes a resource that provides a weekly selection of articles ‘most likely to inform clinical practice’, as well as webinars focused on vaping management, and measuring outcomes in aged care.

Reflective writing for clinician wellbeing
RACGP Rural’s Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine (DWRM) Committee will hold its next online member meet-up on Tuesday 20 February at 8.00 pm (AEDT).

Presented by writer, educator, podcaster and GP Dr Hilton Koppe from Bundjalung Land on the east coast of Australia, the reflective writing workshop is specifically designed for doctors and other health professionals with the goal of deepening their compassion, overcoming professional isolation and reducing risk of burnout.

His workshops have been adapted for people living with chronic and mental illnesses, as well as enthusiastic amateur writers, and been presented in a host of different locations, including the Byron Writers Festival and Harvard Medical School.

Hilton’s book, One Curious Doctor: A Memoir of Medicine, Migration and Mortality, explores the personal impact of working as a country doctor, while his play, Enduring Witness, is used to facilitate conversations about end-of-life care.

He is also co-host of Dementia In Practice, a top 100 Great Australian Podcasts.

Interested members can register online, contact rural@racgp.org.au for more details, or discover more on the DWRM website and Facebook group.

Articles ‘most likely to inform clinical practice’
DynaMed editors monitor a large volume of research evidence on a daily basis through a systematic literature surveillance process.

Each week, research that is ‘most likely to inform clinical practice’ is highlighted in EBM Focus articles, which members can access alongside an archive of back issues through the RACGP Library.

Sufficient information is provided to understand the outcome of the research, but links are provided to further information and the full evidence topic summaries in DynaMed for those wanting to know more.

Find out about DynaMed (login to RACGP website is required), set up an EBM Focus subscription or access a substantial archive of EBM Focus articles.

The importation of single-use nicotine vaping products is now banned in Australia, while additional bans on non-therapeutic vapes are also set to be rolled out in March.

What does this mean for general practice? Will patients stream in requesting prescriptions? How should GPs respond? What is the evidence for a therapeutic role for vapes? The RACGP is in the process of updating its smoking cessation guidelines, including a chapter on vaping cessation.

For answers to these questions, join the first Alt Wed of 2024 to hear from the Chair of RACGP Specific Interests Addiction Medicine Dr Hester Wilson, who will discuss all issues relevant to clinical practice.
