Long-acting reversible contraceptives safe: RACGP President
The RACGP has moved to reassure patients that long-acting reversible contraceptives, such as Implanon and Mirena, are considered safe and effective.

‘I would like to reassure Australian women who are currently using these devices that they have been thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness,’ RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel said in a statement. ‘The RACGP is not aware of any TGA [Therapeutic Goods Administration] warning regarding these devices, nor any report suggesting increased adverse event rates.’
Dr Seidel’s comments come following media reports that call into question the safety of these devices. He has encouraged anyone with doubts about their contraceptive to discuss the issue with their GP.
‘All contraceptive choices have benefits and risks, and it is important to have contraception suited to each woman,’ he said. ‘Your GP will offer specific advice to your individual needs and circumstances.’
