The college is honouring the outstanding contributions of exceptional individuals to general practice.

This year’s awards will hold particular significance in light of the central role general practice has played in responding to Australia’s bushfires and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

GPs across Australia have been called to nominate individuals and general practices who are carrying out significant work on the healthcare frontline.

The annual RACGP Awards recognise the value of practising GPs, as well as those in training, supervisors and general practices.

‘Australians access general practice more than any other area of the health system, and while GPs receive all kinds of acknowledgements from their patients it is important to formally celebrate this work and dedication to holistic patient care,’ RACGP President Dr Harry Nespolon told newsGP.

This year’s awards will hold particular significance in light of the central role general practice has played in responding to Australia’s bushfires and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

‘All throughout these crises, GPs have continued caring for their regular patients and providing preventive healthcare, which may not make headlines but does keep patients healthy and out of hospitals,’ Dr Nespolon said.

There are several awards offered at state and national levels.

The Future Leaders President’s Award is a new accolade in 2020. The criteria for selection will consider behaviours taught and evidenced through the RACGP’s Future Leaders Program. The recipient, however, is not required to have been a participant in the program.

‘The Future Leaders President’s Award will recognise an individual who shows great leadership skills, and promise for the future as a leader both for the college and in general practice as a whole,’ Dr Nespolon said.

Award recipients from previous years have devoted their careers to enhancing the lives of others, going above and beyond to ensure patients receive the highest quality care.

Among them is Dr Mark Miller, a GP based in rural South Australia, who received the 2019 Rose-Hunt Award – the RACGP’s highest accolade. Recognised for his significant work with international medical graduates, he previously told newsGP he was ‘very humbled’ by the honour.

‘Many individuals I hold in high esteem for their contribution to our college, both living and deceased, appear on this list,’ Dr Miller said.

‘Many times before I have said it is possible to go through our careers as general practitioners “one consult and one patient at a time”, but I do think we all have a broader role to play.’

Winners of the 2020 RACGP Awards will be announced later in 2020.

Recipients of this year’s four national awards will be profiled in an RACGP publication, and stand to receive significant prizes:

  • General Practitioner of the Year will receive a $5000 travel scholarship
  • General Practice Supervisor of the Year will receive an educational scholarship valued at $5000
  • General Practitioner in Training of the Year will receive an educational scholarship valued at $5000
  • National General Practice of the Year will receive a staff training grant worth $5000
‘Now more than ever it is important to recognise the hard work of our GPs who have been working tirelessly to deliver quality care as we navigate the pandemic,’ Dr Nespolon said.

‘I urge those who know such GPs, trainees, supervisors or practices to nominate them for this year’s awards – and help to inspire our profession and the next generation of GPs.’

If you know an extraordinary GP, GP in training, supervisor, or general practice going above and beyond to improve the health of the community, nominate them for an award on the RACGP website.

Nominations are open from 20 May and close on 14 August.
