The RACGP has confirmed the departure of its CEO Paul Wappett.

The RACGP has announced the departure of its CEO Paul Wappett and appointed Associate Professor David Hillis as interim CEO.

Mr Wappett served in the role from October 2021 and oversaw substantial change during his tenure, including a major restructure of the organisation and the return of Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) to the college.

RACGP Board Chair Dr Lara Roeske informed members and staff of the change earlier in the day and thanked Mr Wappett for the work he has undertaken.

‘The Board deeply appreciates Paul’s contribution to the RACGP,’ she said.

‘We will now look to build on the transformation we have started, while continuing to deliver exceptional value for our members and strengthening Australia’s health system by growing, enabling and advocating for Australia’s GPs.

‘We want to reassure members that the important work of our college will not stop, and the Board has every confidence in the executive team to deliver stability and steer the organisation.’

Associate Professor Hillis is a former GP and an experienced CEO in the healthcare and education sectors. He also holds a position as Adjunct Associate Professor and Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine.

‘We are grateful to David for bringing his expertise to this role,’ Dr Roeske said.

‘The Board has already begun a global executive search for our new CEO.’

How vital is for the college to have a CEO?

Dr Martina Mary Gleeson   30/11/2023 2:14:59 PM

Have you got a typo? referring to David Hills instead of Paul Wappett?

How about a GP as CEO ...lots of GPs with business degrees eg MBA in Australia

Dr Javier Armando Campuzano Ortiz   2/12/2023 11:44:35 AM

I agree with Raymond, I feel very strongly that all the chairs, board members and the CEO should be GPs or at least doctors, is a medical college. I don't think there is a role for anything else here.

I am not so sure about a global search for a new CEO. Someone who understands the current Australian community-based health priorities, our political landscape and a heathy understanding of educational teams and conservative financial management, might be a better longer-term prospect for stability of our college.
