RACGP CEO Dr Matthew Miles will leave the college having overseen a number of pandemic-related pivots during his tenure.

RACGP Board Chair Christine Nixon told staff of Dr Matthew Miles’ departure on Wednesday afternoon and will assume the position of Executive Chair in his stead.

‘Matthew joined us during a period of disruption and change for our workforce and our GP community,’ she said.

‘The reality of leading a national organisation from Sydney, with a strong staff base in Victoria, has proven particularly challenging amid COVID-related lockdowns and ever-changing state-based restrictions.

‘Matthew’s time as CEO has coincided with some significant and positive developments in his family life. He leaves to spend more time providing much-needed support to his wife and family in the short-term.’

The RACGP Board extended its thanks to Dr Miles for his service, and noted the college’s strong financial position amid uncertain times, a focus on transforming the culture, implementing a new strategic plan, and improving cross-college collaboration among the accomplishments of his tenure.

Ms Nixon’s position means she will take on the dual role of RACGP Board Chair and CEO while an executive search is undertaken. She told newsGP while Dr Miles’ tenure was short, he achieved a substantial amount and leaves with the college’s ‘best wishes’.

‘In his time with the RACGP, Matthew has successfully overseen pandemic-related pivots to the way we run our key RACGP exams, education and other programs and supported opportunities for innovation,’ Ms Nixon said.

‘The Board extends its sincere thanks to Matthew for his service.’

The recruitment process for a new CEO will be led by the Chair of the People, Culture, Nominations and Remuneration Committee of the Board, Dr Charlotte Hespe.
