The RACGP’s 2025.1 Applied Knowledge Test had a slightly lower pass mark to the previous exam cycle.

More than 750 candidates sat the first RACGP Fellowship exam of 2025, answering questions based on the context of Australian general practice.

The RACGP has released the results of its first Fellowship exam for the year, the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), which 765 candidates sat on 17 January.

The 2025.1 cycle of the AKT shows a pass mark of 65.54% with a mean score of 74.36%.

RACGP National AKT Assessment Advisor Dr Sharnti Caulley told newsGP these results demonstrate that the pass mark is slightly lower than the 2024.2 cycle.

‘The slightly lower pass mark indicates a slightly more difficult paper,’ she said. ‘This is adjusted for at standard setting with a slightly lower pass mark.’

‘This resulted in a pass rate of 79.48% of candidates who sat the 2025.1 AKT successfully passing the exam.’

The pass rate is the percentage of candidates who achieved the pass mark.

Designed to test the application of knowledge, the AKT assessment questions are written by GPs who work in clinical practice and based on presentations typically seen in an Australian general practice setting.

Of the 150 questions, there are two types of question within the AKT: single-best answer and modified extended match questions. All questions follow the same format, with single-best answer questions having five answer options, and modified extended match questions 8–10 answer options. Each question has only one correct answer.

A general trend suggests the rate of passing the AKT diminishes with each subsequent attempt, demonstrated by the pass rates by number of attempts for the 2025.1 AKT:

  • First attempt – 87%
  • Second attempt – 49.2%
  • Third attempt – 66.7%
  • Fourth and subsequent attempts – 33.3%
Dr Caulley said preparation and readiness to sit are important for candidate success, and the RACGP provides a variety of resources to support candidates in their AKT preparation.

‘These include the exam support online modules and the self-assessment progress tests (SAPTs) which are available through gplearning,’ she said.

‘The AKT practice exam is also sent to enrolled candidates approximately four weeks before their AKT exam. Both the SAPTs and the practice exam are especially valuable, as they feature real exam questions from recent exam cycles.

‘Each SAPT question is also accompanied by a detailed answer rationale, as well as links to relevant resources and the curriculum.

‘I strongly recommend that candidates complete both the SAPTs and the AKT practice exam prior to sitting the AKT.’

The RACGP has a suite of resources to prepare for Fellowship exams, including the Examination guide which details information about the AKT and accompanying Key Feature Problem (KFP) Fellowship exam.

Results of the 2025.1 KFP exam, sat on 18 January, will be released on 31 March. The assessment dates for the 2025.2 AKT and KFP exams are 4 and 5 July, respectively, with the reports released on 22 August and published on the RACGP website.
