Faculty Council election nominations open
From GPs in Training, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, and Specific Interests, members are urged to ‘speak up for GPs’.
Faculty nominations are now open, and will close on 23 August, 4.00 pm (AEST).
Nominations are now open for GPs to become a member of a wide range of Faculty Councils.
The long list of available positions includes seats on national, state, and territory councils, as well as several Specific Interest groups.
Nominations are open to all RACGP members and gives eligible GPs the chance to influence the college, shape the profession, and ensure the views and voice of individual general practice communities are heard.
Elected Faculty Council members are expected to speak up for GPs and their patients, both within their own communities and advocate to state, territory, and federal governments, with the goal of improving access to high-quality care for all.
The full list of available positions can be found on the RACGP website and includes state-specific seats on the National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, the National Faculty of GPs in Training, and the National Rural Faculty.
Several positions are also up for election within each of the state and territory faculties, as well as on a number of National Faculties of Specific Interests, including aged care, dermatology, obesity management, and respiratory medicine.
RACGP Chair Dr Lara Roeske encouraged all interested and eligible members to put their hand up for a role, telling newsGP their input provides vital contributions to the college and the future of general practice.
‘The faculties enable our members to express their voice within the RACGP, and we encourage all members with diverse perspectives and interests to nominate, she said.
‘As a faculty council member, you have influence to get the opinions of members heard on issues which are impacting GPs and the profession.
‘The RACGP wants to ensure it is accurately reflecting the evolving needs of GPs, their work, and their contributions to healthcare across Australia, and one way we can do this is through active engagement with faculties and their diverse membership.’
Faculty nominations are now open, and will close on 4.00 pm AEST, Friday 23 August, before candidates are announced on 27 August.
The voting period for contested electorates will be open from 12.00 pm AEST, Friday 30 August, until 12.00 pm AEST, Monday 9 September.
Elected Faculty Council members will then be announced on 11 September.
Dr Roeske said elected Faculty Chairs will also become directors on the RACGP Board.
‘This provides further opportunities for our leaders to contribute to the overall governance and direction of the RACGP,’ she said.
‘It will also offer members a chance to actively support their profession and colleagues by identifying the need for faculty-based activities, which can include Continuing Professional Development topics, networking events, local advocacy, and addressing state-based issues.’
