The Australian Patients Association national award for GPs will for the first time be sponsored by the RACGP.

The 2018 APA Awards
Dr Richard Schloeffel OAM (L) won the APA award last year.

The Most Outstanding GP in Australia is awarded annually to a GP who meets their patients’ needs for excellent treatment and interpersonal skills. Criteria also include being readily available, empathetic and possessing a good reputation.

The awards are open until 31 May. Patient nominations of GPs then go to a selection committee.

The most recent winners are Dr Richard Schloeffel in 2018, who specialises in treating complex and chronic disorders in an integrated way, and Dr Elaine Owen in 2017 for her expertise in pain management and empathy. Both are RACGP Fellows.

Australian Patients Association (APA) general manager Jas Streten said the awards were based on the experience patients had of their GPs.

‘The philosophy of the award is about recognising excellence, and the patient’s experience of what excellence is,’ he said.

‘GPs represent the coal face of the healthcare system as the main deliverer of primary care in the population, so they’re really integral.’

The APA also gives awards to outstanding carers, hospitals and pharmacists.

Founded in 2010, the APA is a not-for-profit organisation promoting the rights and interests of patients and focusing on excellence in healthcare.
